Overview

During the latter half of 20th century, Japan experienced an incomparable rapid population increase and urbanization. The habitable area of Japan is only 21% of its total landmass, and 66% is forest. Most of the population is concentrated in a very limited area.

Now Japan is facing the turning point of a population decrease and a super-aged society. Several issues are raised, in particular, the housing problem is one of serious issues. According to report in The Japan Times, there were some 8.2 million vacant houses – or one in seven – nationwide as of October 2013. This record number represents more than a twofold increase over the past 25 years.

 

Yotsukaido city is located about 40 kilometers from the center of Chiba downtown in Chiba prefecture. In 1955, Yotukaido town is established Chiyoda-cho and Asahi- son merge, and the population of at that time was about 18,000. Since about in 1965, there was born a large housing complex, Asahigaoka green town, Chiyoda and Misora apartment complex, and increased in the population rapidly. Yotsukaido town burgeoned into a city in 1981, and its population is about 91,000 now.

The field of LEI project 2016 is Chiyoda apartment complex 4 block and 5 block. The characteristic in this area is a concentration of the terrace housing. After composition of Chiyoda apartment complex, this area has developed a Tokyo or Chiba bed town to maintain a good living environmental condition and local community. However, about fifty year later, residents over 60 years old is more than about 55%. In addition, aged housing, vacant houses and house innovation by changed lifestyle has become an important issues in this area.

Objectives
Objectives
  1. to develop an integrated, inter-disciplinary understanding of the relationship between human behavior, social practices, lifestyle changes, local community systems and sustainability

  2. to research studies aimed at elucidating key social, psychological, and spatial structural dimensions of lifestyle change

  3. factors analysis influencing local community-based initiatives for sustainable living

    Inhabitants feel they have sufficient privacy, and whether they have any feelings of stewardship over their streets or place.

  4. Typology in housing layout changes:
    In the changes of the times and lifestyle, how did change housing exterior environment from basic housing form, and analysis for functional and role dimension.

  5. - Aside from this common contents, each group decide to survey item.
